Each year, the administration at HHS develops a school improvement plan in order to better meet the needs of HHS students and the Hingham community. In response to information collected during the last school year, one of the goals set forth in the 2014-15 school improvement plan was to investigate ways to identify and reduce sources of student stress. In the spring of 2014, 61% of students reported that they regularly slept for less than six hours per night, significantly less than the nine hours recommended by most pediatricians. In addition, very few students report engaging in creative pastimes outside of school. Creative activities can help students build confidence and develop a positive self-image, which can help decrease stress. Interviews with students also indicate that many regularly feel overwhelmed and anxious, which can have significant negative impacts not only on their schoolwork but on their overall quality of life.
The HHS School Council would like to invite HHS students and parents to complete a brief survey about student stress in our community. We hope that this brief survey will help HHS faculty and administration to better understand what causes stress in our students and develop a possible plan for decreasing student stress to be implemented in the 2015-16 school year. This brief survey should take no longer than ten minutes to complete and will be available until February 15th. Please contact Mrs. Pollard at [email protected] with any questions.
